in Chilika Lagoon, India

Date: Feb. 2nd - Feb. 8th, 2004
Place: Chilika Lagoon, India
Co-organizer: Pallishree, Chilika Development Authority

During the Asian Wetlands Week 2004, a number of programs and activities were held under the slogan "Wetlands Love Children, Children Love Wetlands", involving more than 1000 villagers around the Chilika Lagoon.
"Discover Chilika by Boat!" organized by Pallishree (NGO), brought children to various spots in Chilika Lagoon. The children were guided by a young scientist from Chilika Development Authority, and learned about the importance of water quality, flora and fauna of the Chilika Lagoon. They were lucky enough to observe the migratory birds, which deepened their understandings concerning food chain and the function of wetland ecosystem.
Furthermore, a variety of competitions and contests on essay writing, debating, and painting which all themes were about wetland conservation were held among 50 local schools around Chilika. They also organized a rafting competition (the raft was made of banana trunk), where 1000 villagers and school children participated.
The overall event has achieved a great success in fostering children's interests and understandings on the conservation and wise use of the resources of Chilika Lagoon.
