Asian Wetland Symposium 2005
Report

Asian Wetland Symposium 2005(AWS 2005) was held from 6th to 9th February 2005 at Bhubaneswar, Orissa, India, and 400 participants from 32 countries attended. The symposium was organized by RCJ, Chilika Development Authority(CDA), Department of Forest & Environment Government of Orissa, India and other partners with the collaboration and sponsorship of following organizations.

Unfortunately, the Asian Regional Meeting on the Convention on Wetlands (9th-12th Feb.) was unexpectedly postponed at the last minute. However, AWS2005 became a magnificent international symposium with government ambassador from various countries; India, Japan, Vietnam, Myanmar, Nepal, Afghanistan, Iran, etc. as well as international organization, NGOs, researchers, local people, woman, students came from the all over the world especially south Asia. Some of them have met before, the others are new faces and all of them enjoyed this international forum.

The symposium adopted "Chilika Statement" and "TSUNAMI Recommendations" as the result of this symposium and the symposium finished with a great success.


`Opening Ceremony`
There are a lot of banners in Bhubaneswar. Ms. Reiko Nakamura told about the purpose, meaning and task of AWS2005.


`Technical Session`
With a main theme "Innovative approaches to sustainable livelihood", 80 papers were presented at five technical sessions, a special session "Tsunami and Coastal Wetlands", poster sessions, and side events.

`ISC Meeting`
@International Steering Committee (ISC) was consisted of RCJ Asia members, and took key role to prepare and carry out the symposium.


`Closing Ceremony`
Dr. Sundari Ramakrishna (WI-Malaysia) presentated the 'Chilika Statement'. Hon'ble Chief Minister, Orrissa Sj. Naveen Patnaik participated in the closing ceremony and the symosium was successfully finished with a thunderous applause.


Traditional dancing of Orissa was performed at the welcome party. The booth of RCJ, we sold RJC T-shirts, bags and etc.
